PROGRAM

Belmont students in Italy
THE MUSICAL EXPERIENCE: PLAINSONG TO POP, WITH A FOCUS ON THE ITALIAN MUSIC LINEAGE
The Musical Experience: Plainsong to Pop, with a Focus on the Italian Music Lineage offers students a very unique opportunity to learn about the birth of Western Music while immersed in the surroundings where it all happened.  While this course has a focus on music history, from the middle ages to current pop rock artists, the main take-away is gaining a comprehensive knowledge of musical elements and the ability to participate in intelligent and informed conversations about many kinds of music.

Classroom time will include lectures covering the different musical periods (such as classical, romantic and more), learning how to listen and what to listen for, and time for project work.  The lectures are significantly enhanced by the environment: taking in the culture, architecture and overall energy that formed the lives and personalities of many of history's greatest composers.

This course is not at all only about the past! In fact, this unique class gives participants the "backstory" to better appreciate and listen to modern music. Students will attend operas, historical sites as well as pop rock concerts.
